Popular Styles of Jazz from different eras
The objective for this lesson plan is to educate students on the different elements in the specific examples of Jazz shown in the Youtube Videos.
Lesson Strategy using Video in the Classroom
1. Students are studying the different styles of Jazz starting with the early swing eras. This lesson will focus on the differences between the various styles of jazz, from instrumentation to sound.
2. Students will be able to identify different types of jazz by the instrumentation and the sounds of the music.

4. Students will be introduced to big band music and combo music from the 50’s and 60’s in the first video.
a. Afterwards, they will listen to the second video, which includes modern jazz and fusion music from the 80’s. Then they will hear an example of today’s contemporary jazz music that is currently played and heard.
b. Students will then compare and contrast from these examples and will be able to tell how they differ in sound, form, and instrumentation.
c. The students will then be given several band instrumentation examples and will have to match what era they fall under.
d. Finally, students will choose their own instrumentation and genre and give their band a performing name.
